Discussion is lead by Jane Nixon, University of Leeds,United Kingdom; Katrin Balzer, University of Lübeck, Germany

Evidence-based guidelines aim to support clinical decision-making and to secure that, for instance, each person at pressure ulcer risk does receive the most beneficial preventative measures in time. Implementation of guideline recommendations is therefore an ethical obligation of health professionals but a complex task as well. This discussion illustrates typical challenges in the implementation of evidence-based guidance for pressure ulcer prevention and treatment and shows how they can be effectively negotiated in clinical practice.

Discussion is lead by Zena Moore, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Ireland;
Jane Nixon, University of Leeds, United Kingdom; Katrin Balzer, University of Lübeck,Germany

Timely and accurate pressure ulcer prevention is fundamental to achieving quality standards in patient care, however, in reality this can be challenging. This session will guide the participant  through risk assessment and current prevention strategies exploring the key elements to consider. Further, the session will explore how to get prevention consistently applied into practice and measuring the impact. The session will also touch on how to manage when goals of care are not achieved.

Workshop lead by Menno van Etten, Physiotherapist, Norway

To prevent pressure ulcers, the EPUAP guidelines suggest positioning the patient in a 30 degrees side lying position, moving the body load from the sacral- or trochanter area to the gluteal area. Adding the 30 degrees posture to the list of lying positions gives extra challenges to the caretakers. It is important to be aware of how to position the upper body without rotations and how to position the legs in order to prevent discomfort for the patient and stop formation of new PU hotspots.
In general, the positioning of patients is about giving the patient stabilitycomfort and the feeling of security
Questions may be asked if classical repositioning techniques and the materials used to position the patient really give the stability and comfort needed? It will also be discussed if other positions will help in the prevention of PU’s or rather do the opposite (for example by using bed functions)?
